Tips for Saving on Grocery Delivery

Having your groceries delivered can add upwards of $20 to every order you place, mainly from fees, tips, and markups. On the flip side, it can also save you up to eight hours a month spent in the grocery store.

This convenience can be extremely helpful if you don’t like to drive or have limited mobility, but the extra expense may be daunting if you are on a fixed income. Luckily, there are a lot of ways you can save money on grocery delivery, especially if you qualify for things like SNAP or Medicaid. Read on to find out how you could get cheaper grocery delivery.

Half-off annual fees on grocery delivery

Many grocery delivery services charge an annual membership fee. As a member, you receive free or discounted deliveries and other perks. Several delivery services offer discounted rates if you qualify by income or are eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. You can also use your EBT card to get cheaper grocery delivery.

Amazon Fresh EBT discount

Amazon offers discounted rates through its Prime Access program. Being a member gets you free delivery from Amazon and free GrubHub+ membership. You pay half price for annual memberships ($6.99 per month) if you:

  • Are eligible for Medicaid
  • Receive SNAP benefits
  • Meet income guidelines – your household income is within 200% of the federal poverty level (for 2026, this is $31,920 gross income for an individual and $43,280 for a two-person household).

Walmart + Assist discount

Grocery delivery through Walmart is free if you are a member of Walmart +. Their program Walmart + Assist offers half-priced membership ($6.47 per month) if you:

  • Are eligible for SNAP
  • Are eligible for Medicaid

Other discounted memberships

If you prefer to shop at your local grocery store, some chains, like Kroger and Albertson’s, offer reduced-price annual memberships and free delivery. Major companies like Uber One and DoorDash also provide delivery from stores near you.

Grocery delivery companies

  • Uber One offers a free three-month trial membership for people who are eligible for SNAP. With this membership, you get $0 delivery fees on eligible orders. After the trial period, the cost is $9.99 per month, or $96 per year.
  • DoorDash discounts its monthly membership fee through its DashPass SNAP. If you qualify for SNAP, you pay $4.99 a month for one year and get $0 delivery fees on eligible orders. After this trial period, the rate goes up to $9.99 per month, or $96 per year.
  • Instacart has a one-year reduced-priced membership ($4.99 per month) if you are eligible for SNAP benefits. After the first year, the membership is $9.99 per month, or $99 per year.

Other ways to save on grocery delivery

If you aren’t eligible for Medicaid or SNAP for grocery delivery in 2026, you can still save on grocery delivery. To get the best deals, you just need to understand some basics about the way grocery delivery apps work.

  • Plan ahead. Delivery fees are usually higher during times like lunch, dinner, and rush hour. If you can plan ahead and schedule during less hectic times, you’ll save on delivery fees.
  • Don’t rush it. If you can choose standard or next-day delivery instead of same-day or express, delivery fees are often lower.
  • Meet the minimum order. Even with memberships, there is often a minimum dollar amount to get a free order. Depending upon the company, it usually runs $25 to $35. You can also order on Amazon without a Prime membership and get free delivery with orders over $35.
  • Use the trial periods. Many grocery delivery services, including Amazon, Instacart, and Walmart, offer free trial periods. By making use of these, you can get up to 30 days of free membership. This can be beneficial if you need delivery for a short period of time, like when you can’t drive after a surgery. You could also use these periods to try different delivery services to see which one best suits your needs.
  • Subscribe and save. Some companies will offer discounts if you order items that are eligible for auto-delivery. Amazon, for instance, offers up to 15% off if you have five or more products auto-delivered. This is a good way to save on things you use regularly or that store well, like coffee, bread, or pasta.
  • Look for other savings. When you sign up for a membership for grocery delivery, a lot of companies offer perks that help you save money. Walmart offers a 10-cent-per-gallon fuel savings to its members, some offer free subscriptions to online streaming services like Paramount+ or Peacock, and Amazon offers members-only weekly discounts.
  • Avoid app-flation. Some stores will charge you more for groceries when you order online than you would pay when shopping in the store. This small upcharge can add up. Walmart, for instance, guarantees you receive in-store pricing even with online orders.

Grocery delivery isn’t just for people who have money to spare. If you want to try it, but are living on a fixed income, you can still enjoy this service. Shop around for delivery services that offer discounts to SNAP and Medicaid beneficiaries, make use of minimum orders and free trial periods, and plan ahead to save on delivery fees.
